Very sad weekend at our house.............

On Saturday (3/06/10), my hubby and I had to put our 12 year old dog down.

He has had bad knees/stiffness for quite some time and for the last three weeks, I had been taking him to the vet twice a week...for a shot to help with the arthritis pain...in addition to Rimadyl and other ways to make him more comfortable. This winter has been especially hard on him!

I took him for his 7th shot on Friday, and he had improved alot since we started the shots. We thought we were making progress and helping him (he was getting around so much better), but something happended Friday evening while we were gone.

When we returned to the house Friday evening, he could not move his back legs. He would try to get up and end up going in circles with his front feet...the only ones that he could get to move. He could not get his back legs up. My hubby had to carry him outside and set him down to do his "business". He could stand then, however, he was shaking so bad that it was pitiful. Saturday morning, he was no better, so we took him to the vet. The vet said that a nerve was being pinched and the shots had helped his knees and legs. However, his back was damaged with arthritis also and there wasn't anything else they could do for him.

My hubby held him and I talked to Dippy while he was given the shot and he peacefully when to sleep. It was heart wrenching and I cried for most of the day. He was a great dog and the house is so quiet now. Hubby and I will miss him so much. He had helped to keep our "empty nest" from being so quiet, since our two daughters married and moved out of town.

He was a great watch dog, wonderful friend and companion and we are missing him very much.

Take Care and God Bless!

  2. Donna, I know the heartbreak of the death of a beloved puppy companion. I pray the Lord will give you comfort and send a new puppy friend into your life. I did not want to think about another dog when my dear Lily died but my husband talked me into it and I can say that Sadie has been a true healing balm to my grieving heart.

  3. {{hugs}} My deepest sympathies are with you. I lost my 12 yr old golden (Dallas) 3 years ago and I still find myself missing him. They are constant companions and they are missed very much when they are no longer with us.

  4. I am so sorry for your Loss. I know how you feel I lost my furbaby last year. I had Tinker for 11 years. He was a Pom and his little body just gave out to.
Later on I took my grandson to just go look at dogs and then I rescued a Chloe and she has been such a joy. She has helped me with the Loss of Tinker.
    Huggs and Prayers to ya.
